Topkapı Palace Museum
Topkapı Palace, situated in Istanbul, holds a significant place in history as the grand residence of Ottoman sultans for nearly four centuries. Construction began in 1460 under the orders of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, following the conquest of Istanbul in 1453. Completed in 1478, this magnificent palace served as the epicenter of Ottoman governance, culture, and art until the 19th century.
Boasting an impressive 400 rooms within the harem alone, as well as additional structures like a madrasah (Islamic school), mosque, parliament building, and mint, Topkapı Palace was a bustling hub of activity, accommodating up to 4,000 people at its peak. Its architectural splendor and vast archive of approximately 300,000 documents make it one of the largest palace museums globally.
The palace is divided into two main sections: the Outer Palace (Birûn) and the Inner Palace (Enderûn), with the Harem forming part of the latter. This division influenced the layout of residences, ceremonial areas, and other facilities within the complex. Accessible through three primary gates, the Imperial Gate (Bâb-ı Hümâyûn), Bâbüsselâm, and Bâbüssaâde. Topkapı Palace also features four courtyards, the Harem, and lush gardens.
One of the most mesmerizing exhibits within the palace is the Kaşıkçı Diamond, a stunning gem weighing an impressive 86 carats and counted among the world's 22 most famous diamonds.
